My name is Nicole Kernohan. I am 32 years old and I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS). If you were to meet me however, you would never know it. Most people would say I am a very healthy, energetic and optimistic individual!
Just over 10 years ago while I was attending Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I had a significant episode which at the time was diagnosed as a stroke as I had a single lesion on my brain. I completely lost functionality of the right side of my body. The doctors could not understand why someone so young and without the common risk factors would have had a stroke. And they could not tell me whether or not I would recover physically. But with relentless determination, a nutritious diet, supportive friends and family as well as physiotherapy, within 2 months I had fully recovered.
After that episode, I started learning everything I could about healthy lifestyle factors to prevent another stroke from occurring. I wanted to share this information with all my friends and family to help them live healthier as well!
Then at my annual MRI appointment three years later, the doctors said “we can now see multiple lesions on your brain Nicole, you have Multiple Sclerosis. It was not a stroke that you had, it was an MS attack”. Although there is no cure for MS and the disease is unpredictable, I believe there are many lifestyle factors that can help prevent an attack and improve overall wellness.
In my spare time over the past 10 years I have been educating myself through courses, reading, volunteering and through certifications in personal training and nutrition. I spend every extra minute I have helping and teaching others about nutrition and wellness since I have realized the dramatic difference it has made in my own life. I have not had another MS attack and since I have been healthy for so many years, my doctor now believes I am likely to never have another attack.
I graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Business degree in 2004 and have loved working for the past 9 years in various positions at the Canadian Tire Retail Head Office in Toronto. In July of 2013, I made the leap to follow my passion and I purchased the Nutrition House store in Brantford, Ontario, Canada (Natural health supplements & health foods). I now get to spend all of my time, not just my spare time after work, helping others live healthier, happier lives. My goal and the goal of the whole team at Nutrition House in Brantford, is to teach others about health, nutrition and overall wellness.
Yours In Health!
